What Is an Opthalmologist and what does he does?
One of the latest professionals that most people have not heard of is an Opthalmologist or an Optometrist. These are doctors who are trained to see and diagnose problems with the eyes. They are very important in the field of vision care and treatment since they are trained to look at eye problems and help solve them. This profession has become a bit popular over the last ten years because more patients are opting for glasses or contact lenses instead of wearing glasses or contact lenses. This is due to many reasons and an Opthalmologist is one of them.
A panoptics Ophthalmologist is a doctor that specializes in the field of vision care and treatment and is trained to take care of people’s eyes. In order to treat eye conditions such as farsightedness, near-sightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia he or she must have an advanced degree in optometry. The doctor must also have taken a specific course which deals with vision tests and treatment along with all the related equipment like x-ray machines, spectrometers and computers.
The scope of an Ophthalmologist does not stop at vision health. He or she must also be a regular practitioner of eye surgeries like cataract surgery, eyelid surgery, refractive surgery and macular degeneration surgery. There are other fields of expertise that an Opthalmologist can practice in like paediatrics, ophthalmology, anaesthesiology etc. All these specialties require different kinds of degrees and Opthalmologist must hold at least a master’s degree in order to get certification for these specialized fields of medicine.
Some of the typical tasks that an Opthalmologist must do include treating and diagnosing various eye conditions. They can perform autoresponders, manage billing, create charts and keep up patient records. An optometrist must be an expert at computer aided image interpretation. Computer aided images (CAD) are being widely used by optometrists to diagnose and treat eye conditions. For instance, if a patient comes to them with a blurred vision, they will use a CAD to create an image of the eye. This will help them understand what is wrong and to come up with a suitable treatment plan for this particular case.
Many of the patients who come to optometrists for eye surgery do not have vision problems but just need glasses for reading purpose. In such cases they can take computerized reading glasses or laser corrective eyeglasses. A great percentage of the patients coming to ophthalmologists for eyeglasses prescription are people who suffer from eye injuries or have had eye injuries in some way. In such cases the eye specialist must have an excellent knowledge about corrective eyeglasses and how to use them.
